Assessment and Accreditation of Prior Learning

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

This guide provides an introduction to the process for the recognition of learning leading to the award of credit. The process is generally referred to as that of APL – the Accreditation of Prior Learning.

Initially an introduction to the process is provided along with definitions of the terms normally encountered within it. Differentiation is made between different forms of learning with particular emphasis on experiential or informal learning. The assessment of learning is addressed along with the other steps involved within the APL process. Some issues in relation to the establishment of an APL system are discussed.

The key role of the APL mentor/advisor are presented and the relationship with the assessment process are reviewed.

Methodology for recording evidence of learning for APL are discussed and the most commonly used method – that of learning portfolio development – is treated in detail. The structure and content of the portfolio are presented,

Some comment are made on the process of establishing an APL and finally a glossary of terms and some reference points are presented.
